Rugged tablets in ambulance vehicles

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Modern healthcare uses a range of advanced technologies, and today IT in particular is the foundation for successful medical care. In addition, IT is used in ambulances - a growing number of these vehicles are equipped with high-performance mobile rugged PCs that play a major role in saving lives. This is mainly because they can be used in a wide variety of situations and provide constant access to important information, increasing the effectiveness of each medical and administrative process. One example of a modern ambulance service is the Los Angeles Ambulance Service, which has begun equipping its fleet of ambulances with rugged tablets.

Emergency medical services

Ambulance service vehicles are not like a quiet office workstation - resistance to shocks, vibrations, falls and extreme temperatures is very important. Another factor to consider is resistance to body fluids and aggressive substances used in medical care. This also applies to rugged tablets, which meet the highest requirements of this class of information technology.

The past and the present .As recently as mid-2010's, ambulance crews had to operate vehicles and use ambulance stations. Ambulance service vehicles are not like a quiet office workstation - resistance to shocks, vibrations, falls and extreme temperatures is very important. Another factor to consider is resistance to body fluids and aggressive substances used in medical care. This also applies to Acccentec Technologies tablets, which meet the highest requirements of this class of information technology.

That changed in less than six months, however, when crews received rugged tablets

with the Windows 10 operating system. These devices are not only resistant to external elements, but also have excellent ergonomic features, Wi-Fi connectivity, a GPS module and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display with excellent readability in direct sunlight. In addition, all tablets have a SIM card that allows continuous mobile communication. The tablets are assigned to a specific crew or vehicle.

Immediate access to information

The software platform of the compact mobile solution. is the electronic patient card - this application is accessible directly from the tablet and can be used both online and offline with synchronization afterwards. Thanks to the availability of access to central systems, the emergency services have up-to-date data at their disposal throughout the entire operation, from the moment the patient leaves the ward to the time he or she is picked up and transferred for further care. In fact, the quantity of comprehensive data available is an important factor in the success rate of the intervention, as it allows the right procedure to be selected according to the patient's known history. Ongoing communication is also important for hospitals and their emergency rooms - it gives them the opportunity to make appropriate and timely arrangements for the patient's admission.

The electronic card also allows for verification of the collected data, both in terms of common validity at the level of identification data and from the point of view of data completeness.

A special feature is a predictive dictionary from which is provided, which specifies and speeds up the entry of medical texts. In addition, a number of details are automatically captured and transmitted to higher-level systems. Thus, the crew does not have to worry about sending "status" messages, such as information about the location of the ambulance or details about the current status of the operation (departure, on scene, departure with patient, etc.).
